We live in a world of the internet. Just about any information we could dream of is at our fingertips. The question becomes, is there such thing as too much information?
On one hand, I personally think that it is important to be informed. We should be able to make informed decisions and self study to learn new information. However, I also see many inherent problems with having the internet and too much information available. First, we tend to lose reliability and validity. Anything can be posted to the internet. Opinions become facts. Facts become opinions. Lines get blurred and things can take on different meanings. Second, we lose context. For example, a lump behind the ear. A doctor may complete a physical exam and diagnose a swollen lymph node secondary to a virus. Google, on the other hand, is likely to tell you it's cancer. We joke about this, but the truth is that it does happen. More often than we want to think about. Finally, we have to worry about starting to believe we are the experts over others who have studied in the field. Who have spent their lives to learning their field and the reliable information available. The people who add the context back in. Such as lawyers, doctors, and teachers.
I guess on this one, I'm torn and not really sure where I stand. What are your perspectives? Any thoughts that I have missed? Examples? I would love to hear your viewpoints!
